Indica V Sativa: What's the Difference?

Almost any seasoned canna-connoisseur will tell you that you consume Sativa for energy and Indica for rest, but is there any truth behind that claim? It seems like scientists who have ran tests and studies are split down three ways, with some saying there is a defined difference, some claiming that it's less defined and more about where and how it was grown, and others saying that there are numerous variables that control the potential side effects of consuming a cannabis derivative.

Today, we will be specifically targeting the idea that there is a defined difference between Sativa and Indica, just as a small introduction to the potential differences you may encounter between strains. Sativa is said to provide more of an energetic result after consumption, as opposed to the more relaxed effect that Indica is said to produce.

If you are someone who is looking for energy, creativity, and anxiety relief, Sativa may be the strain for you, as it contains more THC and less CBD. Some of the most common strains of Sativa in the THC cannabis world are Acapulco Gold, Panama Red, and Durban Poison. This strain is mostly found in hot, dry climates with long sunny days, like Africa, Central America, and Southeast Asia. These plants are said to be tall, growing around 12 Feet or more, with long thin leaves. It is said that they also may take longer than other cannabis plants to fully mature for harvest. Many connoisseurs recommend this strain for daytime use.

Indica, however, is said to provide relaxation, as well as nausea, pain relief, and some appetite stimulation. This is because of the high CBD concentrate and lower THC concentrate. If you are someone who finds it hard to sleep or relax and deals with nausea or frequent pain, this may be the strain for you! Due to its relaxing qualities, many people suggest that it is better suited for consumption at night. Typically, Indica-leaning plants are grown in harsh, dry, and turbulent climates as they have adapted for such. This strain grows faster, produces more buds, and is shorter and fatter than Sativa plants. The most popular strains of sativa are Hindu Kush, Afghan Kush, and Grandaddy Purple.

Unsurprisingly, you can combine both indica and sativa strains to create what is known as a hybrid strain. Hybrids do not have a standard appearance, effect, or climate. They are most often grown in greenhouses by farmers who are trying to combine different strains to create a new, unique strain with unique effects. Some people may benefit from a hybrid more than they would an indica or sativa, as they may need the effects of both. Some of the most popular hybrid strains are Pineapple Express, Blue Dream, and Trainwreck.

If you are someone who is a visual learner, I have included a chart that shows popular cannabis strains and what they are categorized as, as well as what they may help with. This chart can also give you an idea of what to look for when selecting CBD strains, as higher CBD content is going to aid in relaxation and higher THC is going to aid in creativity and energy.
